It’s all Down from Here: A Northerner’s Adventure South

I’ve come South for the winter (and the school year)! My days of Sorel boots, parkas, & hot coffee are behind me…at least for now. Charleston, South Carolina is my new home for the next eight months and it’s blazing sun & blissful scene have not disappointed me yet! Fabulous food, people, & tree moss….all adored and greatly appreciated.
Despite the simplistic, Southern charm, there still are some things that I’m having difficulty wrapping my head around….

The Niceness

Why are people so nice down here? People start up a conversation on the sidewalk, in the elevator, in line at the coffee shop… Basically, I’m never safe from small talk & I’m absolutely loving it!

Are these in the same family as the taco?

XL T-shirts

I have a feeling I’ll begin adopting this by the end of my time here, but for now I’ll question whether you’re actually wearing shorts under there.

The Chill

Everyone is so relaxed here! Impromptu meetings & go-with-the-flow personas are anywhere & everywhere. It’s as refreshing as the sweet tea, but driving me slightly crazy!

My understanding of humidity has been taken to a whole new level & my hair does not appreciate it.

tbh it’s better than hearing people say “yinz.”  I catch myself slipping some y’alls in conversations.grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes

I’ve met plenty of fellow Northerners here in Charleston who share the same confusions. If you’re familiar with the South, please try to break all the above down for me….clearly, I need it!
