As The Page Turns: Can You Keep a Secret?

Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella

Fiction – current day, London, England

“I’ve always had this deep-down conviction that I’m not like everybody else, and there’s an amazingly exciting new life waiting for me just around the corner.” – Can You Keep a Secret?

So here is the scoop: Emma Corrigan is a young spirited and slightly clumsy professional woman who has secrets. Like many of us, she has them from her boyfriend, parents, colleagues, and everyone else in the world. However, mistaking turbulence for crashing during her plane ride back home, she spills all of them to a handsome stranger. Someone who she never expects to see again as she awkwardly leaves the gate. Come Monday morning, Emma is introduced to the elusive CEO of her company, Jack Harper – a man who now knows all of her secrets. This should be fun!

Thoughts: Do not read this book in a public setting! Unless you are ok to grin and laugh out loud with every page turn. This book is not your run-of-the-mill chick lit novel. It has moments of complete heartbreak and some parts that are so simply human. During the entire time I was reading it, all I could think about is all my secrets and if anyone besides myself knows them (after reading I realized that it is important to not bottle everything up). Sophie Kinsella, the writer of the popular Shopaholic series, creates characters and scenes which are swoon-worthy and completely relatable. I will say that, while Emma is a fun-loving character, her constant need for validation from her parents, cousin, and boyfriend got on my nerves. During the novel I wanted to keep yelling “YOU ARE AMAZING; YOU DON’T NEED THEIR VALIDATION!” Which would be odd in the various airports I was sitting in. But there is truth in Emma’s worries and I find that I have the same ones. I suppose this book has really allowed me to work on a few of my fears!
