Between layovers, bus trips, and time spent waiting in lines, the following six smart phone applications have helped me, as a young professional and a traveler, pass some time, get organized and explore new areas of the country.

Instagram
As most smartphone users know, Instagram is a great way for friends to connect through photos. In Sigma Kappa land, it helps us share pictures of our letters and little sisters. As an LC, it helps me stay in contact with my friends and see where other LCs are headed. I have been able to share a picture of my first gator tacos and shameless selfies all over different campuses. Our lives are filled with plenty of stories and because, sometimes, pictures can tell a story better than we can, Instagram is ideal for any traveler’s tool kit.

Cardmunch

Cardmunch is an app that all young professionals should learn about. After attending any meeting or networking event, business cards can get lost and disorganized. Cardmunch is an app that takes pictures of business cards and automatically syncs the information into the phone’s contacts. At the Field Staff Conference I was able to collect business cards of many other consultants so that, in the future, I can connect with them if our schedules cross paths.

Postagram

Postagram allows the user to create and send postcards for a small fee. The app itself is free, but for 99ยข, users can take photos and make them into a postcard with a personalized message. I use this app to keep my parents in the loop about what I’m doing while on the road!

TED

Open the app and check out the “Inspire Me” tab, select the type of inspiration you need (ex. persuasive, informative), choose the length of your custom playlist, and enjoy! The TED app allows users to search different talks and get the the exact inspiration necessary at any given moment. Besides, who doesn’t what to read a top article called Could we speak the languages of dolphins?

These are some of the rules I learned at the University of Florida but you can learn what you need on the TED app.

Foursquare

In a new city and looking for some local dishes? Check in on Foursquare and receive advice from previous patrons, check out photos, and look into deals that companies often post. Additionally, Foursquare helps travelers track everywhere they visited during a stay!
